We’ve been busy expanding and developing our existing service offerings here at Black Iris and we thought it was about time we told you all about our exhibition training services.

Exhibitions are a fantastic marketing tool for companies and they serve a great purpose for seeking out new business and strengthening existing relationships. In a bid to stand out against the rest, companies can spend hundreds – and often thousands – of pounds on their exhibition stands. It’s crucial to stand out against competitors, but what is often overlooked is the ability of staff working on the stand to do just that. After all, once the stand has captured passing visitors’ attention, the work is down to company representatives to sell the business and generate leads.

Working in collaboration with Zebra, we provide informal, half-day presentation and workshop-based training sessions to companies and staff responsible for exhibiting at trade exhibitions. We share our expert knowledge of event etiquette, pre- and post-event publicity, generating leads and managing leads post-event. Our aim is to help companies maximise the full business potential and value that exhibitions offer, by training the team members and staff managing the stand, so that revenue invested will be excellent value for money and exhibitors can exhibit with confidence!

Reusable stand at ecobuild 2013

ecobuild show is all about sustainability, innovative construction and re-usability of building materials. So it only makes sense for a company that makes a living out as an online exchange for construction surplus and re-usable materials. Recipro can be used to pass on leftover building supplies or to source good quality, low cost construction materials.

Our client, recipro came to us with a brief that the stand has to be contemporary, simple and reusable. Our modular system was just the right solution. With slim aluminium frame that houses individual Foamex panels to display graphics on gives the whole stand contemporary edge, clean finish and it takes only 100mm of depth of the stand. It doesn’t require a team of people to put it up and take it down and the graphics can be re-used for the next show, keeping the cost low as well as reducing the waste.

Exhibition stand at Toyfair 2013

We were approached by our client Mako Creative to help them design and build a stand for their client Tolo.

We have taken the idea from their new Pop Up Farm House toy and made roofs with chimney that housed lights above the slat walls where they displayed their goods.

The exhibition was in London Olympia and the position of the stand meant they had a supporting column in the middle of it that we had to work with. We have clad the column and added a roof to it. The sides had 3D elements to it – a window to the side and a replica of the toy’s rattle, buttons and spinning beads that were in fact, spinning and not just a prop.

A picket fence was added to the plinth at the bottom of the column to finish the look and feel of the stand.

The client also sells a range of gardening tools and these were housed in a shed – complete with tongue & groove walls and a shed roof on top.

It was an absolute pleasure to be able to design such fun stand and receive the great feedback that we did from the client as well as the show visitors.

Installation for art exhibition – Liverpool Biennial 2012

When it comes to the world of art, thinking needs to be adjusted to appreciate the full picture. It isn’t good enough to just build a plinth. You need to understand where it will be position, what it is for and how the whole look and feel will affect the finished artwork.

We feel very honoured to have been asked to build several plinths and display cabinets for Liverpool Biennial 2012.

Here are the photos of the largest installation – 12 freestanding pods to house 46 inch plasmas and DVDs, computers. They were painted in TV white as they were not to be too obvious. The whole idea is for the visitors to stand in the middle of the circle and get immersed in the display on the screens. Around this installation we also made 7 smaller plinths to have projectors fitted to them for other installations.

The artists are Mikhael Subotzky and Patrick Waterhouse and the installation is in the Cunard Building in Liverpool and will be there until 25th November.

Modular graphic display stand for hire

We have added a new product to compliment our bespoke design and build side of the business. Following several enquiries from existing clients and some new, potential clients asking for a graphic display stand that isn’t the usual pull-up or pop-up stand we have found an amazing product that we showcased at a local exhibition.

The framework is light and made out of aluminium and the graphics panels are printed on foamex boards. The counter is stunning with front and back graphic panel to allow for branding.

We showcased the stand yesterday and the response was amazing with a few orders taken and several enquiries to hire the stand for bigger exhibitions. This is perfect to sit inside a shell scheme as it is the same height and therefore covers the usually unsightly walls. The system is highly adjustable and can add iPads, screens and literature holders and it will also sit at 90 degrees to form a corner.

The system is completely double sided and would look stunning as a wall or a room divider with graphics on both sides or in showrooms.

When to hire an exhibition stand?

A rule of thumb says that if you are going to use a particular exhibition stand more than three or four times it pays to buy it. If a majority of your shows are on the back of conferences in hotels, universities and venues other than exhibition halls and you already have graphic displays that you are happy using at those shows but you wish to make an impact at that one-yearly show in a bigger venue and with bigger competitors then it pays to hire a bigger stand just for that show.

If you want to make an impact and stand out only once a year at an important event then hire a stand. Let’s face it – it is likely that in a year’s time you will want a different stand anyway. So why invest a large sum into something that you might not like anymore the year after.

When you hire a stand you still receive our full service of installation and de-rig, transporting of your equipment and marketing collateral, liasing with the organisers, coordinating with graphic designers, printers and AV hire companies. You don’t have to worry about storage of the stand or whether the design will stand the test of times. Because next year you can do exactly the same but with a new look.

You may save the graphics for the next year but in all honesty, these are usually used for one event only. So don’t get sold into the “you can reuse the graphics next year” scenario because I am willing to bet that chances of this happening are very slim indeed. Therefore always budget for a new set of graphics for each show. After all, your business will have grown from the last year and chances are, so will your message to the visitors.

Shopping Mall Installation

Three weeks ago we’ve received a phone call from Creative 7 company wanting a display for a shopping mall where they will be selling their products. The brief was to look crisp, modern and suitable for displaying various gadgets. It needed a fair amount of storage together with a slat wall display. They also needed it in two weeks. This was a tall order and we had to push it back for a week but delivered the whole stand within three weeks of contact.

The finish was high gloss pain to give it the fresh, crisp look they were after. The storage was incorporated in all of the orange boxes as well as a walk in storage with lockable doors on the back. Small details such as matching paintwork on the lights, shelve holders and cable port really pulled it all together.

This installation being in a shopping mall, we had to do it out of opening hours. So last Friday we arrived at Crawley at 7pm after a nearly 5 hour drive and worked until late to install the display. We fitted shelves on site so the client could decide whether they wanted two or three and make sure the spacings were adequate for product display, cable port for the till was drilled on site so the client decided where the till will be positioned. Handles for sliding doors were fitted on site as well as all the graphics.

The first weekend was a big success, our client sold a lot of gadgets and had great response from everyone about the stand. They love it and we are over the moon with the feedback we’ve had from our client.

It is frustrating to hear companies say that they have tried exhibiting once, it was an expensive lesson in wasting money and they will never do it again.

Exhibitions are a fantastic marketing platform when done correctly. Visitors are receptive to your offer, that’s why they have come to an exhibition. To see what companies have to offer. It is the perfect opportunity for them to research the market for new products/services and compare competitors.

Hire a bespoke exhibition stand

We often hear people say they would love a bespoke stand but can’t justify the budget, especially when they are going to an exhibition for the very first time and are not sure if it is in fact the right one for them.

There is no better way to make yourself different from the rest of the exhibitors than showing your brand with a bespoke exhibition stand. So we have put together an all-inclusive offer for a hire of a bespoke timber built exhibition stand – see images below.

 

This is what’s included:

hire of the timber built stand structure for a 3x4m stand with a walk in storage (other sizes available but might incur an extra charge depending on the size);
12 square meters of raised flooring with carpet (your colour choice from the available swatches), aluminium edging and ramp for disable access (not shown on the visuals);
installation and derig – you turn up to the venue and the stand is ready for you, at the end of the show you go home and we come to dismantle the stand;
a freestanding plinth with lockable door, a display drawer and perspex top;
two curved tables on the walls with perspex tops;
32in screen;
printing of the graphics but not the design (freestanding plinth front, front L shape and short back – long back subject to surcharge);
we will liaise with the organisers direct for drawing approvals, insurance, health and safety and method statement forms;
transport to most venues (within 3 hours of drive from our workshop)
